Place with Purpose : Our Charity Promise

A professional optometrist in a modern clinic with soft natural lighting and a subtle hot pink accent.

Have you ever stopped to think about the real weight of your signature?

Whether you’re signing a new contract for a permanent optometrist vacancy or just ticking off a locum shift on a Friday afternoon, that stroke of a pen is more than just a legal requirement. It’s a career milestone. It’s your livelihood. But what if it could be something more? What if that signature could literally change the life of someone thousands of miles away?

At NeedAnOptom, we’ve always said we’re “by opticians, for opticians.” We know the late finishes, the complex prescriptions, and the absolute joy of helping a patient see clearly for the first time in years. We live and breathe the optical world. But recently, we asked ourselves: How can we do more?

The answer is Place with Purpose.

It’s our brand-new charity initiative designed to turn every placement we make into a force for good. We’re not just filling chairs; we’re funding vision. And we’re doing it through an incredible partnership with the folks over at Vision Action.

Who are Vision Action? (And why do we love them?)

You might remember them by their old name: Vision Aid Overseas. They recently rebranded to Vision Action after joining forces with Vision for a Nation, and their mission is as bold as it is vital. They are a UK-based charity dedicated to making sure that everyone, regardless of where they live or how much they earn, has access to affordable eye care and spectacles.

Our diverse optical recruitment team collaborating in our modern office to connect professionals with their perfect roles.

They focus their long-term work in Sub-Saharan Africa: specifically Ethiopia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Zambia. These are places where a simple pair of glasses can be the difference between a child staying in school or dropping out, or a parent being able to provide for their family or falling into poverty.

What really struck a chord with us is how they do it. They don’t just fly in, hand out some old specs, and fly home. That’s a sticking plaster, not a solution. True impact comes from sustainability. Vision Action builds systems. They:

  1. Train local optometry technicians: They empower people within these communities to become the experts. This isn’t just about charity; it’s about education and career building: concepts that are very close to our hearts at NeedAnOptom.
  2. Establish Vision Centres: These are permanent hubs where people can get a professional eye exam and buy affordable glasses. It’s about creating a reliable, local infrastructure.
  3. School Outreach: They go where the need is greatest, screening children and ensuring that vision problems don’t hold back the next generation of leaders, teachers, and: who knows: maybe even future opticians.

It’s a “by professionals, for professionals” approach on a global scale. It aligns perfectly with our ethos, and we couldn’t be prouder to support them.

The Permanent Promise: Our Commitment to You

If you’re looking for your next big move in optical careers, we want that transition to feel as rewarding as possible.

The key here is simplicity. For every permanent or resident placement we successfully facilitate, NeedAnOptom will make a charitable donation to Vision Action.

But here’s the best part: the donation is made in YOUR name.

It’s our way of saying thank you for trusting us with your career. When you step into that new optician job or take on a fresh challenge in a high-street practice, you’ll do so knowing that your career growth has directly contributed to someone else’s ability to see.

It’s not just a placement; it’s a legacy. You move forward, and the world gets a little clearer for someone else. It’s a win-win. True story.

The Locum Link: Power to the People

We know many of you prefer the flexibility of locuming. You’re the “special forces” of the optical world, stepping in when practices need you most. Through our partnership with The Clinical Exchange, we’ve made locum booking easier than ever.

But we wanted to give locums a way to participate in “Place with Purpose” too.

For every locum booking made through our self-service Marketplace on The Clinical Exchange forum, you’ll find a dedicated charity donation link. This is entirely voluntary: no pressure, no “tough love” here, just an opportunity.

If you’ve had a great day, or you’re just feeling particularly grateful for the freedom your locum lifestyle provides, you can choose to donate a portion of your booking fee directly to Vision Action. Even the price of a coffee can help fund a screening or contribute towards a pair of frames.

Let’s have a look at how it works

It’s important to recognise that we’ve kept the process as seamless as possible. We’re recruiters, not bureaucrats. We want the money to get where it’s needed, fast.

  1. Find your role: Browse our latest optometry jobs on the NeedAnOptom search page.
  2. Get placed: Work with our expert team to land that perfect resident position.
  3. The donation triggers: Once you’re settled in your new role, we handle the donation to Vision Action. You’ll receive a confirmation, knowing that a contribution has been made in your name.
  4. Track the impact: We’ll be sharing regular updates on our blog about the total funds raised and the specific projects Vision Action is running on the ground.

Why are we doing this? (A bit of “Tough Love”)

Let’s be honest for a second. The recruitment industry doesn’t always have the best reputation. People often think it’s just about headhunting and commission.

But at NeedAnOptom, we believe your career is too important to be treated like a transaction. You’ve spent years studying, thousands of hours in dark rooms, and you’ve dedicated your life to the clinical care of others. Why should the process of finding a job be any less meaningful?

We want to challenge the idea that a job search is just a “necessary evil.” It’s an opportunity to align your professional life with your personal values. If you’re choosing between two different optical recruitment agencies, why wouldn’t you choose the one that gives back?

If you’re sitting there thinking, “Does my one placement really make a difference?”: stop it. That’s a self-limiting belief. One person being trained as an optometry technician in Ghana can serve thousands of patients over their career. Your one placement helps fund that training.

Wow! Think about that for a second. The ripple effect is massive.

The Clinical Exchange: More Than Just a Job Board

If you haven’t joined The Clinical Exchange yet, you’re missing out on more than just locum shifts. It’s a community. It’s where we share knowledge, offer support, and now, where we come together to support Vision Action.

It’s our hope that “Place with Purpose” becomes more than just a tagline. We want it to be a movement within the UK optical community. We want our candidates to feel a sense of pride not just in their clinical skills, but in the global impact they’re making by simply being great at their jobs.
