UK Healthcare Hiring Market Pulse: 2,204 Live Vacancies | 05/10/2026
Part One: The headline
NeedAnOptom Healthcare UK Healthcare Hiring Market Pulse | 05/10/2026
What is the UK healthcare hiring market actually doing right now?
Our latest combined monitoring captured 2,204 unique live UK healthcare vacancies, excluding veterinary listings.
This edition combines two NAO LinkedIn job-post monitoring runs:
- 25–26 September 2026
- 05 October 2026
The dataset was de-duplicated by LinkedIn job ID, with the later capture used where a posting appeared in both runs. That gives us a corrected baseline for this edition of the UK Healthcare Hiring Market Pulse.
It is worth being clear about what this figure means. This is NeedAnOptom Healthcare’s own internal monitoring, not an official industry report. Sector is inferred from the job title, so the category assignments are approximate. A small number of roles may be classified differently if the title is broad or unusual.
So, is 2,204 the entire UK healthcare vacancies market? No.
Week-on-week context
Earlier editions were built on partial captures with inconsistent sector categories. This corrected baseline supersedes those earlier partial figures. A stable category framework is now the priority, so future editions can be read against each other reliably.
Part Two, Where the demand sits
Let’s have a look at the category split.
| Discipline | Live vacancies | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing | 937 | 42.5% |
| Healthcare assistants and carers | 438 | 19.9% |
| Doctors, GPs and Surgeons | 221 | 10.0% |
| Other healthcare | 209 | 9.5% |
| Dental | 173 | 7.8% |
| Optical | 94 | 4.3% |
| Practice and clinic management | 87 | 3.9% |
| Aesthetics | 25 | 1.1% |
| Technicians and allied health | 20 | 0.9% |
| Total | 2,204 | 100.0% |
The first thing that jumps out is the weight of nursing. Nursing alone represents 42.5% of the visible market. Add healthcare assistants and carers, and those two categories account for 1,375 vacancies, or 62.4% of the total.
That is a sizeable majority.
Doctors, GPs and Surgeons make up another 10.0%, while Other healthcare contributes 9.5%. Dental, Optical and Practice and clinic management are smaller slices, but smaller does not mean unimportant. In a tighter category, a well-positioned candidate may have a clearer opportunity to stand out.
Optical accounts for 94 listings, or 4.3% of the total. For our readers, that is the number to watch.

Part Three, Where the roles are
Nation and region
| Nation or region | Live vacancies | Share |
|---|---|---|
| England | 1,778 | 80.7% |
| Scotland | 202 | 9.2% |
| Wales | 92 | 4.2% |
| London Area | 39 | 1.8% |
| Northern Ireland | 37 | 1.7% |
| Manchester Area | 6 | 0.3% |
| Greater Bristol Area | 5 | 0.2% |
| Greater Guildford Area | 4 | 0.2% |
| Greater Norwich Area | 1 | – |
| Central Treviscoe | 1 | – |
| The Home | 1 | – |
A further 38 postings have no nation stated, which is why the nation figures total 2,166 rather than 2,204.
LinkedIn supplies town or city and nation information, but not counties. That is why London Area, Manchester Area, Greater Bristol, Greater Guildford and Greater Norwich appear as separate lines rather than being placed inside England.
The leading locations by town or city are:
- London: 157
- Glasgow: 36
- Birmingham: 34
- Manchester: 30
- Greater London: 30
- Bristol: 30
- Liverpool: 30
- Northampton: 21
- Surrey: 19
- Nottingham: 18
- Kent: 18
- Reading: 17
This is a leading-locations view, not a full list of every location represented in the dataset.
Workplace split
| Workplace type | Live vacancies | Share |
|---|---|---|
| On-site | 2,046 | 92.8% |
| Remote | 83 | 3.8% |
| Hybrid | 75 | 3.4% |
| Total | 2,204 | 100.0% |
The message is pretty clear: healthcare hiring remains overwhelmingly on-site.
A fully remote role is the exception rather than the norm. For most candidates, the practical details still matter enormously: the commute, the location, the shift pattern and whether the working week fits around life outside work.
Optical detail
There are 94 optical listings in this edition.
The leading optical roles are:
- Optometrist: 37
- Dispensing optician: 13
- Contact lens optician: 5
- Consultant ophthalmologist: 3
The recorded optical nation breakdown is:
- England: 72
- Wales: 8
- Scotland: 7
- Northern Ireland: 4
Optical is therefore a genuinely four-nation market in this data. It is not restricted to one dominant part of the UK.

Dental detail
Dental contributes 173 listings.
The leading dental roles are:
- Dental nurse: 34
- Associate dentist: 18
- Dental practice manager: 18
- Dentist: 12
- Trainee dental nurse: 7
- Qualified dental nurse: 5
Practice and clinic management detail
There are 87 practice and clinic management listings.
The largest groups include:
- Practice manager: 28
- Clinic manager: 17
- Deputy clinic manager roles
- Dual-site practice manager roles
Aesthetics detail
Aesthetics contributes 25 listings, although this category needs a careful reading.
The largest group is theatre and anaesthetic practitioner roles, with 9 listings. There are also 6 true aesthetic practitioner roles, alongside a small number of aesthetic doctor, medical aesthetician, and aesthetics nurse or doctor posts.
The aesthetics category remains materially under-captured by the search terms used. In other words, 25 should not be treated as a complete measurement of the UK aesthetics market.
Part Four: What this means for candidates
1. The busiest part of the market is nursing and care
Nursing, healthcare assistants and carers make up the bulk of the visible market.
That means candidates in these areas are applying inside the busiest part of the picture. There may be more vacancies, but there can also be more applicants and more variation in role requirements.
Your thought might be: “There are loads of jobs, so I can apply for anything.”
True. But that is not always the strongest strategy.
A better script is:
“My priorities are clear. I am looking for the right role, not simply the next available role.”
Write down your preferred setting, location, working pattern, salary expectations and progression goals before you start applying.
2. Smaller categories can create sharper positioning
Optical, dental and practice management roles represent smaller slices of the overall market.
That can work in a well-targeted candidate’s favour.
You are not trying to be everything to everyone. You are showing that your experience fits a particular professional need. A focused CV and a clear explanation of what you want can make a real difference.
For optical professionals, that might mean being specific about whether you are seeking a clinical role, a dispensing position, a contact lens opportunity, leadership progression or greater flexibility.
“It’s too competitive” is a common worry.
Maybe. But vague applications make competition worse. Clear positioning gives people something concrete to remember.
3. Location still decides most moves
Demand is concentrated in London and the major cities, with England accounting for the largest share of recorded vacancies.
That does not mean you must move. It does mean you should be realistic about the geography of opportunity.
Ask yourself:
- What is my maximum acceptable commute?
- Would I relocate for the right opportunity?
- Do I need access to public transport?
- Which shift patterns are workable?
- Is a four-day role more valuable to me than a higher salary?
- Do I want an urban setting, a local community or a wider regional patch?
Tough love time: “I will consider anything” is not a strategy.
A clear brief produces a better match.
4. On-site work is the normal position
With 92.8% of roles listed as on-site, commute, relocation and shift pattern will decide most moves.
Remote and hybrid opportunities exist, but they are limited in this dataset. If remote work is essential, say so early. If it is simply preferred, decide how much flexibility you are willing to trade for the right clinical environment or progression opportunity.
The best move is not always the role with the shortest advert or the biggest headline salary. It is the role that works in real life.
